Alaska Family Vacations

Alaska Vacation Articles

Due to its popularity with the retiree crowd, many parents of young children don't consider Alaska family vacations as a good choice of destination. There certainly are some things to consider when planning a trip with youngsters to Alaska that one might not be concerned about elsewhere, but with the proper preparation it is as much a trip of a lifetime for kids as it is for their parents.

One of the great things about an Alaska vacation is the sheer number of things to do. Deciding in advance what activities would appeal to your family is an important consideration. This should be part of you family discussions before the trip, and getting the kids involved in the planning process will also get them excited about the destination.

Kids like to be active, but one of the main attractions of Alaska for older folks is simply sightseeing. Majestic mountains and vast, unspoiled wilderness may be enough for an adult to enjoy, but kids like doing things against that backdrop. Consider what kinds of things your kids like to do at home, and then ramp it up a notch. Or, if you are trying to shake them out of too much time in front of the tv, then you will have to get them excited about many of the options available once they get to Alaska.

Most kids love animals, though many might only have experienced them through television, or as cartoons. The abundance of wildlife is a great feature of an Alaska vacation, but the truth is wildlife can be elusive, and is often seen off in the distance. Consider a trip to the Alaska zoo, located in Anchorage, at the very start of your vacation. This will give the kids a chance to see what kinds of animals are native to Alaska, and get them excited about the possibility of spotting them in the wild. If the Alaska zoo is not possible on your itinerary, then consider doing the same at your nearest zoo before embarking on the trip. This is a great plan particularly for young children, who have a lot of enthusiasm for animals.

You might have to shake a bit of your own lethargy before embarking on your vacation with your family. Alaska has so many options for active people that the kids might keep you on the move the whole time. Consider a family adventure: many tours are family friendly, but still allow you to experience the wildness of the state with a good amount of safety precautions. Some of the options are bear and whale viewing expeditions, hiking in the mountains and seeing the glaciers, jet-boat river tours to view bald eagles and other wildlife, small boat excursions along the coast, or — always a crowd pleaser — whitewater rafting down a wild Alaskan river.

If you kids like fishing, the sheer number of great fishing spots will keep you busy. There are also tours available for deep-sea fishing, as well as inland lake fishing and fly fishing in hundreds of lakes and streams.

Another great option for a family trip is to rent and RV and see the land on your own. This often works well combined with one or two adventure tours. Keep in mind that Alaska is a huge place, and time on the road can be lengthy, so bring things that will help keep your kids from getting restless. Binoculars are important, so the kids can try to spot wildlife from the vehicle. For young kids, colouring books and such are a great way to keep them occupied for the long drives. If you can, try to keep everything themed around the trip, so that the kids are still engaged.

Planning Alaska family vacations may seem like a daunting task, but the sheer number of options available means that you will easily find plenty for you and your family to do. Many of the tours are family-friendly, and very safe. It is really up to your budget and your family's desires what adventures you decide to embark on. Whatever it is, the pristine beauty and ruggedness of Alaska is sure to create memories for you and your kids that you will never forget.
