Whether you are an experienced angler or would just like to try the sport out, Alaska fishing vacations are hands down one of the best trips you could hope for. Set against a backdrop of incredible mountains, wild rugged coast, and vast unspoiled wilderness, fishing in Alaska is elevated to an experience so enjoyable you are not likely to ever forget it. Not to mention the hundreds of rivers and lakes, and miles of coastline, all teeming with a huge variety of fish!
The fishing season in Alaska is predominately May to September, though ice-fishing is popular with those brave enough to visit in the winter. The summer is short, with July and August being the warmest, and most popular, months for fishing. Don't worry about being crowded out though; there are so many lakes and rivers spread out over this vast land that it is easy to get away from other people and enjoy some secluded angling in your own sweet spot.
Fishing along the coast is popular, and there are many tours that cater to those who are interested in that kind of fishing. Halibut and Salmon are abundant, and grow to huge sizes along the Alaska coast. Most Halibut are around 20 to 50 pounds, and King Salmon easily get up to 90 pounds. Salmon can be fished early in the coastal waters, and into the summer they head upstream on the rivers. The Kenai river is a popular spot for catching King and Silver Salmon.
For those heading inland, fly-fishing and sport fishing in the interior are exceptional. Dolly Varden and Rainbow trout populate the waters, and both give a good fight making the fishing exciting. Combine that with the backdrop of mountain ranges, and frequent grizzly bear, moose, and other wildlife sightings, and you've got one awesome fishing trip to brag about when you get home.
Other common freshwater species include Grayling, Lake Trout, Northern Pike, and Pink Salmon. For those heading to the far north, Arctic char abound in the lakes and rivers that drain into the Arctic ocean.
Alaska has a host of fishing guides and tour operators, as well as many fishing lodges. A really great experience is a remote fly-in trip, where a small float plane brings you to your very own isolated fishing spot. This is when you can get a real sense of the vastness of the land, and really feel like you have left civilization behind.
No matter what option you choose, Alaska fishing vacations are among the finest in the world. Fishing enthusiasts of all stripes will appreciate the majesty of the land, the variety of species, and the sheer number and size of fish. If you are serious about fishing, try to plan a trip with like-minded individuals, so that you can really get the most out of the trip. There are so many options available, it is likely that you will still have a long list of places you didn't get to, and fish you didn't get to try for, before you already have to head back for home. Not to worry, there's always next year, and Alaska will be waiting for you.
